League Cup final defeat to Wolves
On this day in 1980 Forest miss out on a third straight League Cup.
Nottingham Forest’s attempt to win a third consecutive League Cup ended with a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley.
Forest arrived as holders and as one of the strongest sides in the country. Brian Clough’s team had won the competition in 1978 and 1979, so the final carried the chance to complete a remarkable domestic cup sequence. Instead, Wolves denied them that piece of history.
Andy Gray scored the only goal after a costly mix-up between Peter Shilton and David Needham, leaving him to tap into an empty net. The moment decided a narrow final and turned Forest’s chase for three League Cups in a row into Wembley disappointment.
For supporters, the match carried disappointment rather than collapse. Forest were still European Cup holders and still a major force, but Wembley belonged to Wolves that day. The 1-0 defeat remains the moment when the League Cup run finally stopped.
