Euro Super Cup win in Barcelona
On this day in 1980 Forest draw at Barcelona to win the European Super Cup on aggregate.
Forest secured the European Super Cup at the Camp Nou, drawing 1–1 with Barcelona to win the tie 2–1 on aggregate.
Brian Clough’s European champions had taken a 1–0 lead from the first leg at the City Ground, where Charlie George scored early on his debut. In Barcelona, Forest had to protect that advantage against the European Cup Winners’ Cup holders.
Barcelona levelled the aggregate score through Roberto’s penalty, but Kenny Burns scored the decisive Forest goal before half-time. Burns headed in after Larry Lloyd’s header, restoring Forest’s aggregate lead and giving Clough’s side the goal that ultimately settled the tie.
The draw completed another European honour in a golden period for the club. After winning the European Cup, Forest added the Super Cup by standing firm away to Barcelona, a result that underlined how far the team had travelled under Clough and Peter Taylor.
