Draw at Östers seals Euro progress
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1979 Forest draw at Östers IF to advance in the European Cup.
Nottingham Forest completed their first step as European Cup holders by drawing 1-1 away to Östers IF and winning the first-round tie 3-1 on aggregate.
Forest had built the platform in the first leg at the City Ground, where Ian Bowyer scored twice in a 2-0 win. That meant the trip to Sweden was about protecting the tie rather than chasing another statement victory.
Östers gave themselves hope when Mats Nordgren scored early in the second half, but Forest avoided a nervous finish when Tony Woodcock equalised with around ten minutes remaining.
The away draw did the job. Forest did not win on the night, but they controlled the overall tie well enough to move through as defending champions.
The 3-1 aggregate win sent Forest into the next round and kept the defence of the trophy alive. It was not one of the famous European nights, but it was part of the campaign that ended with Forest retaining the European Cup in 1980.
