League Cup final win against Saints
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1979 Forest beat Southampton to retain the League Cup.
Nottingham Forest retained the League Cup by beating Southampton 3-2 at Wembley.
Brian Clough’s side had already won the competition the previous year, and returning to Wembley gave them the chance to prove that success was not a one-off. Southampton made the final a serious test by leading at half-time, but Forest had enough quality and composure to turn the match around.
Garry Birtles scored twice after the break and Tony Woodcock also scored for Forest, giving the final a strong attacking shape. The goals helped turn another Wembley appearance into another piece of silverware during the club’s extraordinary late-1970s run.
The 3-2 win confirmed Forest as back-to-back League Cup winners. In a period filled with league and European achievements, retaining a domestic trophy added another layer to the sense that Clough’s team could handle the biggest occasions.
