Liverpool holders eliminated at Anfield
On this day in 1978 Forest hold Liverpool at Anfield to eliminate the European Cup holders.
Nottingham Forest produced one of the defining early nights of their European story by holding Liverpool 0-0 at Anfield and knocking out the reigning European Cup holders.
The hard work had been done in the first leg at the City Ground, where Forest won 2-0 through Garry Birtles and Colin Barrett. At Anfield, Brian Clough’s side did not need another goal; they needed to protect the advantage they had already earned.
Liverpool had won the European Cup in each of the previous two seasons, so the tie carried enormous weight. Forest were still new to the competition, but the goalless draw stopped the holders from finding a way back into the contest.
The result completed a 2-0 aggregate win and immediately changed how Forest were viewed in Europe. They were no longer just English champions entering unfamiliar territory; they had eliminated the team everyone understood as the benchmark.
