Charity Shield glory against Ipswich
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Ipswich Town 5-0 at Wembley to win the Charity Shield.
Nottingham Forest announced themselves on the Wembley stage with a 5-0 win over Ipswich Town in the FA Charity Shield.
Brian Clough’s side arrived as league champions and played with the confidence of a team still rising. Martin O’Neill gave Forest the early lead and Peter Withe added the second. The second half turned the game into a Wembley statement.
Larry Lloyd scored Forest’s third before John Robertson converted a penalty. O’Neill then added his second of the afternoon, completing a scoreline that gave the match a surprisingly one-sided shape.
The Charity Shield did not carry the weight of the league title Forest had just won, but the performance mattered. It showed that Clough’s team were not treating their success as a finished story. They were still hungry, still organised, and still capable of making elite opponents look ordinary.
