Draw at Man City in title run
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1978 Forest earn a point at Manchester City in the title run-in.
Nottingham Forest came through a demanding title-run fixture with a 0-0 draw away to Manchester City.
The match was played at Maine Road during the closing stages of Forest’s remarkable 1977-78 First Division campaign. It was not an open game, and chances were limited, but Forest still had a moment of frustration when Tony Woodcock went down under a challenge from Kenny Clements and the visitors appealed for a penalty that was not given.
On a night built more around control and resistance than attacking rhythm, the goalless draw still carried value. Away matches against strong opponents tested Forest’s nerve as much as their football.
By this stage, every result was being measured against the possibility of a league title that had seemed improbable at the start of the season. For supporters, the draw was not spectacular, but it was useful. Forest avoided defeat, added another point, and kept moving through the pressure of the run-in.
Sometimes title seasons depend as much on afternoons like this as on the wins.
