Woodcock cup winner over QPR
On this day in 1978 Forest beat QPR in an FA Cup second replay.
Nottingham Forest finally overcame Queens Park Rangers with a 3–1 win at the City Ground in an FA Cup fifth-round second replay.
The tie had already demanded patience and stamina. Forest were chasing honours on several fronts in a season that would become one of the greatest in the club’s history, and another replay added to the pressure on Brian Clough’s squad.
Martin O’Neill opened the scoring early in the 2nd minute before QPR equalized early in the second half. Tony Woodcock then scored twice for Forest, giving Brian Clough’s side the result they needed to send them deeper into the FA Cup.
The 3–1 victory kept Forest’s cup ambitions alive during a remarkable league-and-cup campaign. QPR had made the tie awkward, but Forest found the goals and authority they needed when the replay returned to Nottingham.
