League Cup derby victory over Notts
On this day in 1977 Forest beat Notts County 4–0 in a League Cup tie at the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest’s League Cup derby win over Notts County became part of a season already gathering force under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.
Forest won 4–0 at the City Ground in the third round, a result that carried local edge as well as cup importance. John Robertson opened the scoring with a direct free-kick, before Tony Woodcock made it 2–0 from a Peter Withe pass.
Ian Bowyer then scored twice, with Withe again involved for the fourth goal. That blend of Robertson’s quality, Woodcock’s movement, Withe’s link play and Bowyer’s timing gave Forest a decisive derby night without needing extra drama.
The match mattered beyond local bragging rights. Forest went on to make the League Cup one of the first major trophies of the Clough-Taylor era, so this emphatic win over Notts County sits neatly inside the cup run that helped announce the side’s rise.
