Shilton signing transforms trophy era
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1977 Forest sign Peter Shilton from Stoke City.
Peter Shilton’s arrival from Stoke City gave Nottingham Forest one of the defining figures of the club’s greatest era.
Brian Clough signed the England goalkeeper from Stoke City for around £270,000 in September 1977, only months after Forest had returned to the First Division. The move was a statement of ambition, bringing in a proven international at a time when Forest were still being judged as newly promoted outsiders.
Shilton’s presence immediately strengthened a side already built on organisation, confidence and fierce competitiveness. Behind defenders such as Kenny Burns, Larry Lloyd and Viv Anderson, he gave Forest authority in goal and helped turn a promising team into a title-winning one.
The signing aged almost perfectly in Forest history. Shilton became a central figure as Forest won the First Division title in 1977-78, the League Cup, and then back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980. Few signings have fitted a club’s biggest moment so completely.
