Woodcock winner fuels title run
On this day in 1977 Forest win 3–2 at Wolves during their title-winning season.
Nottingham Forest earned an important early title-season away win by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 at Molineux.
Peter Withe put Forest ahead in the first half, before Ian Bowyer and Tony Woodcock struck after the break. Wolves responded late through Bell and a Daley penalty, but Forest had done enough to leave with the points.
The win belonged to the early weeks of the 1977-78 First Division season, when Brian Clough’s newly promoted side were still proving they could compete at the top level. Away wins like this helped turn early promise into something more serious, giving Forest momentum in a campaign that would become extraordinary.
For supporters, the match was another sign that promotion had not made Forest cautious. They went to Molineux, scored three times, and survived late pressure. By the end of the season, Forest were champions of England, and results like the 3-2 win at Wolves helped build the belief and points total behind that achievement.
