West Ham 5-0 rout starts cup run
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1977 Forest beat West Ham United 5–0 during their League Cup-winning campaign.
Nottingham Forest’s League Cup defence began to gather force with a 5-0 win over West Ham United at the City Ground.
Brian Clough’s side were still newly promoted, but the performance had the confidence of a team already starting to believe in itself. Forest attacked with purpose and punished West Ham heavily, turning the tie into one of the early statement results of the campaign.
Martin O’Neill, Tony Woodcock and Peter Withe all scored, while Ian Bowyer struck twice. The range of scorers underlined the balance of the side: Forest were not relying on one route to goal, and West Ham struggled to contain them once the match opened up.
The win carried extra weight because of what followed. Forest went on to lift the League Cup later that season, and this emphatic night at the City Ground became part of the run that helped announce Clough’s promoted team as much more than top-flight newcomers.
