Withe equalizer at Notts in promotion season
On this day in 1977 Forest draw with Notts County in the promotion season.
Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 away to Notts County in a local derby during the 1976-77 promotion season.
The match carried more than ordinary league weight because both the opponent and the timing mattered. Forest were pushing for promotion from Division Two, while a derby at Meadow Lane brought the extra edge that comes with local rivalry.
Notts County went ahead through David Bradd after 17 minutes, but Peter Withe equalised for Forest ten minutes later. The 1-1 draw gave Forest a point rather than the stronger result they would have wanted in the run-in, but Withe’s reply made sure the derby did not get away from them.
The result belonged to the tense closing phase of the promotion chase. Forest were taken under pressure, but the point still helped them move closer to the end of a season that would take them back to the First Division.
