Withe double boosts promotion push
On this day in 1977 Forest beat Blackpool during their promotion season.
Nottingham Forest strengthened their promotion push with a 3-0 win over Blackpool at the City Ground.
Brian Clough’s side were trying to force their way back into the First Division, and a clear home win helped keep that momentum moving. Blackpool were beaten decisively, with Forest showing the attacking edge needed during the run-in.
Peter Withe scored twice and Tony Woodcock also found the net, giving the match a strong promotion-season identity. Withe’s double provided the main punch, while Woodcock’s goal added another reminder of the attacking options that would soon help drive Forest into an extraordinary new era.
The 3-0 victory belonged to the run that carried Forest back to the top flight. Within a year, they would be champions of England, but this was one of the results that helped make that rise possible.
