Birtles league debut against Hull
On this day in 1977 Garry Birtles makes his Forest league debut against Hull.
Garry Birtles began his Nottingham Forest league story in a 2-0 home win against Hull City.
At the time, it was simply a league debut in a Second Division match. In the years that followed, it became more interesting because of what Birtles went on to become. He developed into an important forward for Brian Clough’s side and played a major part in the club’s European Cup era.
The Hull match gave Birtles his first league appearance for Forest, placing him on the path from emerging player to European Cup-winning striker. Debuts often look ordinary in the moment, but they can become important markers when the player later leaves a deeper mark on the club.
Forest won the match 2-0, making the afternoon a positive beginning rather than just a personal milestone. For Birtles, it was the start of a league career at the club that would soon be tied to some of the greatest nights in Forest history.
