Marathon tie win over Swindon
On this day in 1967 Forest beat Swindon in an FA Cup second replay.
Nottingham Forest finally settled a marathon FA Cup fifth-round tie against Swindon Town with a 3-0 win at Villa Park.
The sides had already drawn 0-0 at the City Ground on 11 March and 1-1 at Swindon on 14 March, meaning a rare second replay was needed to decide the tie. The longer it went on, the more the fixture became a test of patience as well as quality.
Forest made sure there would be no fourth meeting. Barry Lyons, Joe Baker and John Barnwell scored in a 3-0 victory, giving the tie a decisive ending after two earlier draws had failed to separate the sides.
The result sent Forest through after an unusually drawn-out cup contest. It added another memorable chapter to the club’s strong 1966-67 season and gave supporters the relief of seeing a stubborn FA Cup tie finally put to bed.
