NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Happy Birthday Neil Webb (born 1963)
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1963 former Forest midfielder Neil Webb is born in Reading.
Neil Webb became one of Forest’s most gifted midfielders of the late Brian Clough era.
Born in Reading, Webb joined Forest in the mid-1980s and quickly developed into a midfielder with timing, technique and goal threat. He could pass, arrive in the box and influence games in a way that made him stand out in a strong side.
His first Forest spell brought major recognition. Webb was part of the team that won the 1989 League Cup, scoring in the 3-1 final victory over Luton Town at Wembley. That goal helped turn a good Forest team into a trophy-winning one again.
He later moved to Manchester United and was capped by England, before returning to Forest for a second spell. The return did not carry quite the same sharpness as his first period, but it kept his story closely tied to the City Ground.
Webb is remembered as a classy midfielder from a time when Forest still had the ability to develop, polish and showcase players capable of winning trophies and reaching international football.
