Le Flem late winner beats Wolves
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1963 Forest beat Wolves 4-3 through Flip Le Flem’s late FA Cup winner.
Forest came through a seven-goal FA Cup thriller by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-3 at the City Ground.
The tie came during the chaotic winter of 1962–63, when the Big Freeze had thrown the FA Cup calendar into disorder. By the time Forest and Wolves finally met in the third round, the competition already felt stretched and unpredictable.
Wolves were still a major First Division name, but Forest started with purpose. Colin Addison put them ahead after 18 minutes, and Johnny Quigley doubled the lead before the half-hour. Wolves fought back to make a proper cup tie of it, but Trevor Hockey struck early in the second half to keep Forest in front.
The decisive moment came in the final minute. Richard “Flip” Le Flem, a Forest forward whose unusual nickname made him stand out almost as much as his surname, scored the late winner to settle the game 4-3. It was his only FA Cup goal for the club, but it was enough to give him a permanent place in this particular Forest story.
The victory sent Forest deeper into a cup run that later took them past West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United. The journey finally ended in the quarter-finals against Southampton after two draws and a heavy second-replay defeat, but the Wolves tie remained the wildest afternoon of the run.
