Key Sheff Utd win in promotion run
On this day in 1957 Forest beat Sheffield United in the promotion run-in.
Nottingham Forest boosted their Division Two promotion campaign with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United at the City Ground.
Forest started quickly, with Higham scoring after six minutes to give the home side an early advantage. Wilson added the second in the 72nd minute, giving Forest enough of a cushion to carry pressure through the closing stages.
The match came during the final stretch of the 1956-57 season, when every point mattered in the push towards the First Division. Sheffield United were beaten by a Forest side trying to finish the job after months of work.
The 2-1 scoreline gave the afternoon a useful balance of tension and reward. It was close enough to carry pressure, but strong enough to keep Forest’s promotion hopes moving in the right direction.
For supporters, this was one of those run-in results that mattered because of where it sat in the campaign. Promotion pushes are built on matches like this: difficult, narrow, and valuable when the table is tightening.
