Happy birthday Peter Shilton! (born 1949)
On this day in 1949 former goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton is born.
Peter Shilton’s birthday marks the story of one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to wear the Nottingham Forest shirt.
Shilton arrived at Forest in 1977 and became a central figure in the club’s greatest era. Behind a disciplined Brian Clough side, he brought authority, consistency, and calm to a team that was about to achieve things few outside the City Ground could have imagined.
With Shilton in goal, Forest won the First Division title, the League Cup, and back-to-back European Cups. His presence gave the defence a level of assurance that mattered in tight league matches and on the biggest European nights.
His career also stretched far beyond Forest. Shilton became England’s record appearance holder with 125 senior caps, playing across three World Cups and remaining a benchmark for longevity at the highest level. For Forest supporters, though, his peak years are tied forever to the club’s rise from promoted side to champions of England and Europe.
