6-0 rout of Southampton
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1947 Forest hit six past Southampton in a Second Division win.
Nottingham Forest produced one of their biggest post-war league wins by sweeping Southampton aside 6-0 at the City Ground.
The match came in the Second Division during the first full Football League season after the Second World War, when clubs were still rebuilding rhythm, squads and support after the long wartime interruption. Forest turned this afternoon into one of their clearest statements of the campaign.
The damage began early. Lyman opened the scoring after six minutes, and Edwards doubled the lead midway through the first half. Sailor Brown made it 3-0 before the interval, leaving Southampton with little way back.
Forest kept going after half-time rather than simply protecting the result. Lyman scored again, Brown added his second, and Brigham completed the 6-0 win. The spread of scorers gave the scoreline the feel of a complete team performance rather than one player’s extraordinary day.
The victory matched Forest’s highest-scoring league performance of the season and stood as their biggest winning margin of 1946-47. In a difficult post-war campaign, it remains one of the sharpest snapshots of Forest at their most ruthless.
