Clough mentor Alan Brown born
On this day in 1914 Alan Brown, the Sunderland manager who helped shape Brian Clough, is born in Corbridge.
Alan Brown was not a Forest manager, but his influence runs quietly underneath one of the greatest chapters in the club’s history.
Born in Corbridge in 1914, Brown became known as a strict, demanding and principled manager at clubs including Burnley, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday. At Sunderland, he signed Brian Clough from Middlesbrough and became one of the key managerial figures in Clough’s playing life.
Clough later remembered Brown as a man of directness and standards. Looking back on the move to Sunderland, he wrote that Brown was known as “a strict and honest man”, and that he trusted him because Brown was as good as his word. Another account says Clough often wished he had Alan Brown beside him when he later became a manager himself.
That matters to Forest because Clough carried some of those lessons into his own management. Brown’s discipline, blunt authority, high standards and willingness to give responsibility to younger players all echoed in parts of the Clough style that later transformed the City Ground.
Brown belongs in Forest history not because he served the club, but because he helped shape the manager who changed it.
