Early Notts County FA Cup win
On this day in 1887 Tinsley Lindley and Frank Burton score as Forest beat Notts County 2–1 in the FA Cup.
Forest won an early competitive Nottingham derby in the FA Cup, beating Notts County 2–1 at the Gregory Ground.
The fixture belonged to football before the Football League had begun, when local cup ties carried the feel of clubs still shaping their place in the game. County took the lead through Ted Harker, but Forest answered through Tinsley Lindley and Frank Burton.
The comeback gave Forest more than a place in the next round. It was an FA Cup win over their nearest rivals, achieved by turning the match around rather than simply protecting an early advantage.
For supporters looking back, the appeal is direct: opponent, competition, score and names. Forest beat Notts County 2–1, with Lindley and Burton providing the goals in one of the club’s early competitive derby victories.
