Referee whistle first used (1878*)
On this day in 1878* Forest’s FA Cup win over Sheffield became linked to referee-whistle history.
Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup win over Sheffield became linked to one of football’s most repeated referee-whistle stories.
Forest beat Sheffield 2-0 in the FA Cup second round on 21 December 1878. The match is often connected with the early use of a whistle by football match officials in England, and Forest’s official history has credited the game as the first occasion in the country where a referee used one.
However, this claim needs careful handling. Football officiating in the 1870s was not organised in the same way as the modern game. Matches were still commonly controlled by umpires, with the referee’s role developing over time. Some later accounts also confuse Sheffield with Sheffield Norfolk, and there is wider debate around exactly when whistles were first used by football officials.
For Forest, the importance of the story is its place in the club’s wider innovation folklore. The 2-0 win over Sheffield was a real FA Cup match, but the whistle claim should be treated as a historically debated first rather than an undisputed fact.
* Date note: 21 December 1878 is the verified date of Forest’s FA Cup match against Sheffield. The whistle connection is included because Forest history and later football-history sources link the match to early whistle use, but the exact “first” claim remains debated.
